How to get better sleep, naturally

Gone are the days when not getting enough sleep and surviving on 5 coffees was a thing to be admired.

While the debate about exactly how much sleep we should be getting is still ongoing, one thing that everyone seems to agree on is that sleep deprivation (including having low quality sleep) is absolutely destructive to our overall health and wellbeing.

There are so many fascinating processes that occur while we sleep.

You can think of sleep as the time when your body undergoes maintenance. 

The sympathetic nervous system is activated during periods of stress. This is also known as the "fight, flight or freeze" response.

It's during this time that our bodies release stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. During this time, survival is our primary concern.

The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for the opposite of the "fight, flight or freeze" response, a.k.a "rest and digest".

This is when your body works on other processes, like reducing inflammation and digesting your food, which are not essential to your survival if say for instance you needed to escape a shark attack.

Many of the chronic diseases we see today, like Diabetes, hypertension or arthritis, occur as a result of us being in constant stress mode.

This prevents us from doing the maintenance necessary to keep us in homeostasis or balance.

When our bodies are out of balance, we get sick.

So, why are we not getting enough of this "rest and digest" activation? Well, there are some underlying diseases that prevent us from sleeping.

Thyroid disease, depression and even some medications to name a few.

However, for the majority of us who struggle to sleep, various factors in our lifestyles are often the underlying root cause.
