Ants seem to appear out of nowhere, and before you know it, they're taking over.
We recently had an invasion.
Well, kind of.
I had left a plate on the ottaman in the lounge, and when I finally got around to taking it to the kitchen, it was covered in ants.
I had no idea where the ants came from because we don't usually have many around the house, and this was A LOT of ants, so it was very strange.
Soon, I was spotting ants everywhere in the lounge.
On crumbs that had fallen on the floor.
On insects that had died in the lounge (may they RIP).
And I still couldn't figure out how they had come in or where they were nesting.
Until one night, we followed the train of ants and spotted a colony of ants at the corner of the fireplace.

My usual response would have been to grab a store-bought insect repellent and spray the shi them with copious amounts of it.
If I wasn't coughing afterwards, then it wasn't enough.
However, since starting my hormone healing journey, I've ditched commercial insect repellents along with many other common household cleaning products.
The truth is, I had never stopped to think about what’s actually in insect repellent before.
Commercial insect repellents often contain harsh chemicals (makes sense since many are designed to kill) but not only are they harmful to insects but many are harmful to us, our children, and our furry friends.
Many insect repellents contain chemicals that can disrupt our hormones, deteriorate indoor air quality, and pose a risk to our kids and pets who might accidentally ingest them.
Scary as that may sound, nobody wants to live in an ant-infested space.
I got you.
Here's a DIY ant repellent that’s easy to make, effective, and, most importantly, safe for your family and pets.

Here's what you'll need:
A spray bottle (I prefer to use glass whenever using essential oils because essential oils are highly concentrated and can eat at the plastic, but glass is not 100% necessary for this recipe.)
A funnel (optional)
Vinegar
Essential oils
Water
Ingredients:
30 drops peppermint essential oil
10 drops clove essential oil
10 drops lemon essential oil
1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 cup water
How to make:
Mix all the ingredients in a spray bottle. (Use the funnel to avoid spills when pouring the vinegar and water.)
Shake well before each use. (Oil and water don't mix, so the oils will settle above the vinegar/water solution over time.)
Spray the ant repellent around the areas where you’ve noticed ants.
So why does this work?
Ants are extremely sensitive to smells.
The strong scent of the peppermint, clove, and lemon essential oils will confuse their olfactory (smell) receptors, making it difficult for them to find food sources.
Vinegar, on the other hand, destroys the scent trails that ants leave behind for other ants to follow.
Not only is this DIY ant repellent super easy to make, but the best part is that you know exactly what’s in it.
No hidden chemicals and no toxic ingredients.
So the next time you see a line of ants marching towards your sugar jar, don’t reach for the chemical-laden insect repellent.
Instead, whip up this easy, natural, and safe DIY ant repellent.
Your family, your pets, the environment and your hormones will thank you for it.
